What are Piles?

The anus is surrounded by many blood vessels that form vascular cushions. Any excessive strain placed upon them (usually chronic constipation) can result in these blood vessels becoming inflamed and swollen, which is what piles (haemorrhoids) are.

Though benign in nature, piles can be very painful and alarming.
At Colorectal Practice, we provide specialised expertise in piles removal and effective pain relief.

Do I Have Piles?

If these symptoms below sound familiar you might be suffering from piles.
  • Pain: Pain is experienced in and around the anus
  • Bleeding: You may notice blood on the toilet paper when you wipe, or in your stool
  • Discomfort: You may feel a lumpy feeling in and around your anus

However, should you experience sudden and intense pain and swelling, it is a sign that you have piles that might have become strangulated or thrombosed — a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

Symptoms of Piles
As the symptoms of piles are quite similar to that of some other colorectal conditions, it is highly recommended that you visit a colorectal doctor in order to properly diagnose and treat you.

Why Did I Get Piles?

Do You:

Suffer from chronic constipation, which increases the strain exerted on the blood vessels in the anal region?

Bring your handphone into the bathroom, causing you to sit for excessive periods of time on the toilet longer than necessary?

Regularly lift heavy weights, which places strain on the extremities of the body?

Eat more spicy food than your body can handle, causing frequent bowel movements?

Any of these will increase your risk of developing piles (haemorrhoids)!

When Should I See a Doctor for Piles?

In some very mild cases, piles can resolve on their own after a few days.

Sometimes, home remedies such as such as reducing strain during bowel movements (e.g. staying hydrated, using stool softeners) may be sufficient to relieve symptoms.

However, if symptoms persist, or the pain and bleeding is quite severe, prompt medical attention from a haemorrhoids surgeon in order to prevent worsening and complications.
